Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness(DOMS)

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

Delayed-onset muscular soreness (DOMS) is muscle discomfort that occurs after you have exercised. It often begins a day or two after an exercise. During a workout, you will not have DOMS.

Pain experienced during or soon following an exercise is a different type of muscular soreness. It's known as acute muscular soreness.

Acute muscle soreness is the burning feeling you get in a muscle after a workout as a result of a rapid accumulation of metabolites during vigorous exercise. It normally goes away as soon as you stop exercising or shortly thereafter.

Mechanism

The onset of muscular pain after exercise is complicated. According to the secondary injury concept, following the original trauma (muscle damage or injury), the inflammatory cascade that ensues might cause secondary harm.

Neutrophils and proinflammatory macrophages play a vital role in phagocytosis, which is the elimination of cell debris. Excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by these inflammatory cells, on the other hand, can cause collateral damage to healthy cells that were not involved in the initial trauma by denaturing the proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that comprise those cells

Causes

  • High-intensity exercise can shred your muscle fibers into small, microscopic rips. Your body responds to this injury by raising inflammation, which may cause muscular discomfort to appear later.

  • Any high-intensity activity can produce DOMS, but one type, known as eccentric exercise, is frequently responsible.

  • Eccentric workouts cause you to tighten and extend a muscle at the same time.

  • An eccentric movement is, for example, the controlled downward motion when you straighten your forearm following a biceps curl. Running downhill causes your quadriceps to stiffen up, which is an eccentric action.
